Last night was my artist conversation event, the public was invited into elsewhere and I got to curate and plan some of their experience. So I went all out, maybe too far, there was a lot to take in:
Kitties in Heaven, with Dr. Derya listening to your stories about passed away pets and Ms. Ambo creating a commemorative slide of your animal in heaven with a dead celebrity watcher.
Pet Medium- Our in house Claire-voyant made contact with passed away pets during the breaks, letting people know how their loved animals were doing on the other side.
Object Speed Dating- Folks were invited to choose an object in the space that reminded them of a story, then to bring it over to a speeddating session in hopes of pairing it up with another lonely object from the collection. Danna, Aliya, and Diana made it happen with the help of the invincible Kat rounding up the folks.
PLUS!! People could sit and read in the library with the lovely Alexa and check out the paper doll books.
Blanket did an awesome job of documenting the evening and I've snatched some of his pictures to share, Dan made the sound system bump and got our projector to show our beautiful kitties in heaven slide show. George, Steph and Kirsten greeted the 300 some folks and made sure they had a clue as to what was going on. Curtis and Kaylan helped keep things rolling and of course our new residents Molly and Anthony were pumping up the party as well.
okay, I think I remembered everyone. but it was an interesting evening - people of all types, bizarre party land, and now some awesome animal slides and object pairs to remember it by. AND P.S.- i had an awesome jumpsuit that derya sewed my name onto.
Today the paper doll booklets came in the mail! They turned out great. So there will two copies of each of the three volumes that will live on here at elsewhere. They're also available for you or your friend or your mom to buy on Lulu's website.
1/2 of profits will go back to support elsewhere, while the other half will of course go straight to my student loans.
A few highlights:
- antique can opener section lived above the antique can closer section.
- crystal uzi- somehow proving that evolutionists are wrong.
- albino baby sloth next to baby duck in a bell jar.
- blowfish with a truckers hat.
- beanie baby section, next to the underwater world area.
- army postcards for sale at the end.
- free fudge at the end.
overall totally awesome trip. Most definitely any elsewhere visitors or north carolina frequenters need to go.
Also, Derya and I are getting started on our project in this room. It will involve paper cutting into the wallpaper, derya's fabric portraits, a more domestic feel, and a sitting area for conversation and reconciliation with the ghosts of the building.
More explanation later with better in progress photos of course.
so in processing my elsewhere experience- i realized a few things:
- space is at a premium
- some pieces are not to be touched or rearranged
- there are spirits or ghosts or some kind of presence in the upper floors
- i'm surprised at my lack of enthusiasm for the objects around me
- i'm surprised that i'm much more fascinated by the people and their behavior/interactions
all of these things made me initially want to do a piece that would exist on the interweb- something about connecting these objects to people's memories and experiences- a piece where people from anywhere could partake--- instead I realized that I don't have the skills to make that possible and i should stick with what i can do in a few weeks. so i started taking picture of the people and all the clothes and i'm pulling them together with the stories that i've heard here, and the stories folks have sent me into several paperdoll books. I'm posting an edited story i got from someone far away:
Hey,
I surely can't help you: I am completely totaly depressed and have no stories to tell.
I am thirty something. I was such a beautiful baby, full of promises.
I am even lying to my grandmother: She thinks that I'm working in computers.
Saturday I went to the Lac de Créteil to learn sailing. It's such an outfashioned activity that the only other person who was there was an 81 year old guy. There was no wind at all. My boat and the old guy's boat stayed at the same place during 6 hours. I was so sunburned. That's my life.
This morning I grabbed a small hula hoop and made a big dream catcher to help catch those night terrors. I'm hoping it will work, even if it might be a placebo...
I also took some pictures of this place Erika showed me on the way to the Y. For some reason this house is just floating on these jenga-like structures. It seems like basements are not a big thing here... maybe someone could explain that to me.
Elsewhere has been inducing an intense amount of night terrors in me. Erika gets a good roommate award for not kicking me out yet. So if anyone has any night terror stories or information that would be awesome! Apparently only 2% of Adults experience it and it's usually connected to mental illness or anxiety--- let's bank on anxiety...
while checking through the library last evening I found some good books:
I did find some answers in the For Boys Only book that I'd like to share:
Q: Why do so many older girls keep telephoning you, and want you to take them to the movies, or buy them candy and cokes, or spend a lot of money on them when you haven't a big allowance? Why can't they leave a fellow alone?
A: Well, of course there are some girls who feel that they can't get dates any other way. And of course there are fellows who are grafters and like to be invited to go places, especially if the are clever enough to make the girls pay for them! Some girls are willing to pay for boys who have no more pride than to be tame cats that way. This doesn't apply to the sensible plan of " going Dutch," which is perfectly all right, of course. And there are some girls who are uncomfortable when they are with older boys or men, and feel much more at ease with boys of your age.
so awesome read more
